New - AMSOIL Motorcycle OIL Presentation ONLINE
When I was a young boy I was always fascinated by the Corvette, the look, the
power, I just wanted one. It didn’t help that our neighbor has a split window Vette
with his son being driving age and I was always eager to go for a ride.
Now those of you that know Corvettes know that 1982 was just about the worst
year for performance. The EPA was leaning on GM and the solution was to reduce
HP, offer only an automatic trans, introduce the first electronic fuel injection
(Crossfire) and put an 85MPH speedo in it..... So why did I buy an 82?
Well performance can be worked around but the body is another matter. For me
any Vette after 1982 lacks the individuality. What I mean is from 1957 - 1982 the
Corvette was identifiable a long way off, not like todays Corvette. Of course I
would have liked to have found 68 or 69 with a big block but the odds are I could
not have afforded it. With all that being said, let the project begin
In Jan of 2006 My son and I drove to
Alabama to pick up the car. This was a turn
around trip driving there and back in a day. I
found this car on the Internet, made the
deal on email and drove to pick it up. The
car ran well, trans shifted all the OEM parts
were in tact.
Got her home and in the garage, now we
can really take a look at her. Driveablity
we look real good but the cosmetics were
another story. The interior was worn out
except for the seats, I was looking at
carpet, steering wheel, rear storage
doors, dash and other items...
Got the seats out, getting ready to pull up the
carpet. Once we got the carpet up we found
that the car hard leaked once or twice.... We
ground out the lose rust, treated the good metal
and resealed the floor. Once that was done we
followed it up with Dayna mat sound deading.
The door panels were removed and cleaned
several times then treated with Mother
protectant to bring them back to life.
The passenger side carpet looked better
but the floor pan was far worse on this
side. As you can see the seats look great,
they are the original 26 year old seats...
Same with the door panels. At this point
my wife and I are trying to decide to stay
original or make it our Corvette. Later you
will see what we decided.
Carpet gone, grinding and cleaning....

1982 Corvette Project
The story continues......
And continues
Steph, still grinding and cleaning
First layer of treatment, followed by two more
Passenger side getting its treatment
Finished with the treatment and resealed the
welds. Now we will lay the Dayna mat, jute
and carpet.
Laying out the new carpet, make sure its
all there and test fitting.
We used Mothers leather cleaner on all the
interior parts. It worked well, we were very
pleased with the results. After cleaning we used
Mothers protectant to bring it back to life.
Just one of many little surprises... The
drivers seat power motor (3 motors in 1) is
burnt up. Cant find a rebuilt one so I called
one of my AMSOIL account parts store,
the kind that old and cluttered that you
would think could find a thing but yet they
are the go to place... They sent my motor
off to a shop and had it rebuilt.
Seat striped and repainted
Reworked the seat tracks, and painted.
Cleaned, repainted, reworked seat tracks and
looking good.....
This is the storage compartment and
battery box. I had to replace the frame and
doors due to age. The plastic was very
brittle and broke easily
The wheels were in sad shape, many years of
neglect.
Steph working on the wheels, we used
Mothers aluminum polish
Still working....
Not bad, we bought new center caps since
there was none on it...
While we had the door panels off I reworked the
door handles and mirrors. I did some
preliminary diagnostics on the mirror servos
and found them to be in-op. So back to my
parts store to get the servos rebuild since there
not available. After getting the servos back I
found that they still did not move.... Ahhh its a
passion, or I would be pulling my hair out
Time to work on the engine. First things first I
did end engine flush before I opened her up.
After removing the air breather I could see
many years of varnish build up on the
injectors and the injector bodies. Power foam
is a very strong combustion chamber cleaner,
do not get it on paint. A couple of applications
and she look good as new... I really love this
stuff, it works miracles.
Ahhhhh, clean
Looks pretty good for 91,000 miles and 26
years.... Hummmmm Roller tip rockers??
If you look at the pics before this one you will
see a black OEM cluster. At this point we
made the decision to build it our way so I
painted it to match the car’s color.
Freshly painted, working on reassembly
Center console, who need a wiring
diagram...Its amazing after 6 other owners
and 26 years all the OEM wiring is there with
OEM connectors.
Custom made speaker boxes in the works.
Speaker finished and matched to cars paint...
I painted the speedo bezel to match also
Interior all back together and looking good
Pulled the rotors off to repack bearing, next
thing you know its a toal front end rebuild.
Steering gear box, power steering pump, new
A frame bushings, tie rod ends, PS valve, new
lines, ball joints.
Well why stop at the front end. Brake upgrade
drill and slotted rotors with hawk brake pads.
